The Magnet™ Recognition Program® Is The Highest Institutional Honor Awarded For Nursing Excellence

The Magnet™ Recognition Program® was developed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to recognize health care organizations that provide nursing excellence. Recognizing quality patient care, nursing excellence, and innovations in professional nursing practice, the Magnet™ Recognition Program® provides consumers with the ultimate benchmark to measure the quality of care that they can expect to receive.

Magnet™ status is an award given by the ANCC to hospitals that satisfy a demanding set of criteria measuring the strength and quality of their nursing. Specifically, a Magnet™ hospital is one where nursing delivers excellent patient outcomes.

Through recognition of an organization as being among the best in the nation for nursing care, consumers can be sure they have chosen the best provider, and health plans can be assured of the organization’s commitment to high quality patient care.

As of February 2010, in New York State, there are 17 facilities that have been designated as Magnet™ facilities. Catholic Health Services has the distinction of having two of those facilities. Catholic Health Services is the only health care system in New York that has two Magnet™ designated hospitals.

Achieving Magnet™ recognition status means the patient care programs at both Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in W. Islip and St. Francis Hospital – The Heart Center® in Roslyn, NY have been named the best in the nation. It underscores the commitment of staff to continually strive harder to work together to meet or exceed the needs and expectations of patients and their families.
