CHS Emergency Services

All six of Catholic Health Services of Long Island’s Hospitals have active Emergency Departments that provide care to individuals with a wide array of medical issues including patients with critical or complex conditions such as heart attack and stroke to simpler yet urgent problems such as cuts and broken bones. CHS Emergency Departments are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and they treat any patient that walks through the door, regardless of ability to pay. However, as an extremely active Emergency Department, it manages a range of medical and surgical conditions. The St. Francis emergency department sees 20,000 patient visits every year and all patients are seen by a board certified attending physician. It is also a state-designated Stroke Center.

St. Francis was one of the first hospitals on Long Island to adopt a new cooling technique that can revive unconscious patients who have suffered cardiac arrest and restore their normal brain activity using the lifesaving concept, therapeutic hypothermia.

Plans are underway to begin expanding the emergency room to about twice its size, to be able to meet increased demands for services in the future. Construction will begin in late 2009, with completion set for the first quarter of 2011.
