St. Joseph Hospital Daisy Award winners

Three St. Joseph Hospital (Bethpage, NY) registered nurses recently received the DAISY Award® for Extraordinary Nurses. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation's programs to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day.

Lacey Mantovani, RN, Tatiana Morisseau, RN, and Heather Ribera, RN, all of the hospitals critical care unit, were nominated by patients and/or their families for providing compassionate care, going above and beyond and for staying true to Catholic Health’s I-CARE Values (Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Excellence). The three nurses are part of a special cohort as they represent the inaugural Daisy Award winners at St. Joseph Hospital. Nominations for the Daisy Award opened this summer.

“I’m excited to roll out the Daisy Award at St. Joe’s as it offers another avenue to recognize the incredible work that our nurses do every day,” said Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) Anthony Esposito, DNP, MSN, RN. “I’m so incredibly proud of Lacey, Tatiana and Heather for not only delivering outstanding care but also for going above and beyond for our patients and their families.”

The three nurses accepted their awards during an internal celebration, hosted by the CNO and the nurses’ Nurse Manager Suzanne McDaniels.

Submitted on behalf of the nurses by a family member of a patient, following are the winning entries:

Entry for Lacey: A hug that meant more than a hug.
“My mom was in the hospital for organ failure and for sleeping for a week. My family and I were terrified. All the nurses in the unit were amazing; however, Lacey, in particular, was a big help in our darkest hours. We did not know if my mom was going to live. Lacey was a calming person for my nana and I to talk to and very comforting. When I first arrived to the hospital, I was alone and did not know how critical my mom’s condition actually was; after I found out, I was hysterically crying, lost and scared. Lacey comforted me and gave me a hug that I really needed that day. She was very very attentive to questions that my family and I had and played a crucial role in learning what exactly is going on with my mom.”

Entry for Tatiana: A talk to remember.
“Tatiana is an amazing nurse. We only had her for one day but her energy was very positive and so sweet; she was a joyful person to talk to and you can tell she really cares about her patients. She came in to visit my mom when my mom finally woke up and talk to her – which isn’t required by the nurses.  I thought it was really sweet of her to do that. Super friendly, great bedside manner.”

Entry for Heather: (under)Stood up for her patient!
“Heather was an amazing nurse that we had for two days. Although I was very happy my mom was awake, there were still concerns I had before my mother was to be discharged; things that most people wouldn’t understand. It made me feel understood when I talked to Heather, very sweet and understanding. She is an amazing nurse. She is going on maternity leave in soon and she works like a pro in her 9th month of pregnancy! Truly amazing.”

The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes.  Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease.  The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.

Daisy Awards submissions may be made by patients, family/friends of patients, their peers, physicians and staff. Learn more about nominating a St. Joseph Hospital nurse.
