Spine Program: Prevention

Prevention
Not all cases of lower back pain are preventable. However, there are steps that can be taken to minimize the chances of suffering from low back pain.
Exercise: Aerobic conditioning and strengthening exercises, particularly core strengthening, improve and maintain fitness levels and may help to avoid episodes of low back pain.
Safe lifting: Learning how to properly lift objects can help prevent injury.
Proper sitting and standing: Correct posture helps with proper alignment.
Weight management: Maintaining a proper weight helps avoid unnecessary strain on the back.
Avoid or quit smoking: Smoking is known to increase the risk of osteoporosis and to interfere with proper blood circulation.
Proper nutrition: Calcium and vitamin D may help prevent osteoporosis and compression fractures.
