George Marchelos St Catherine of Siena Wound Care

When you hear the word “wound,” you may think of a cut or incision that needs stitches. However, certain ailments carry with them the possibility of wounds resulting from disease.

George Marchelos, a 62-year-old from Bohemia, NY, needed three amputations on his left foot due to an infection resulting from diabetes. As part of his recovery, he came to St. Catherine of Siena’s Center for Hyperbaric Medicine & Wound Healing in Smithtown, NY, to commence a regimen of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBO). The advanced wound care treatment brings highly pressurized oxygen to the wound site in a controlled and comfortable horizontal chamber. After six weeks of HBO therapy, George’s foot had completely healed.

“Hyperbaric oxygen therapy brings nutrients and blood flow to the wound to facilitate healing,” said Alexandra LaRocca, DPM, of St. Catherine of Siena Hospital’s Hyperbaric Medicine team. “Also, the daily commitment and active encouragement of our nurses and support staff helps keep patients on track, which leads to positive results.”

George is back to work and happy to be able to get back on his motorcycle. Asked about the Hyperbaric Medicine & Wound Healing team at St. Catherine, he doesn’t mince words. “They really made me comfortable and put me on the road to healing. Everyone took an interest in my health. I feel very blessed.”
