Education and Support
Good Samaritan University Hospital (West Islip, NY) offers childbirth classes for Long Island mothers and supporting family members. Perinatal education offers a unique opportunity for the entire family to become involved in the parent-child bonding process. Knowledge of what is expected to happen is one of the keys to having a positive childbirth experience.

Classes We Offer
"First Time Around" Prepared Childbirth (Lamaze)
Five 2-1/2 hour weekday evening classes or one, eight hour weekend superclass; $125 per couple.
"First Time Around" childbirth course prepares expectant couples for childbirth. Topics include stages of labor, common routines and procedures, pain relief options, the coach's role during labor and care of mom and baby. Couples will also take a tour of the maternity department and learn the Lamaze breathing and relaxation techniques that will help during labor.
"Second Time Around" Labor Refresher (Lamaze)
One, 3-1/2 hour class; $60 per couple.
This superclass helps mothers and their coaches reinforce the breathing, relaxation and labor support techniques they learned for their first birth. Helpful methods for easing sibling rivalry will also be discussed. "Second Time Around" Lamaze can help couples change what they did not like about their first birth experience and help make the birth of their next child an exhilarating moment of joy.
"Cesarean Section" Class
This class will prepare expectant mothers and their partners for what to expect in the event of a planned or unplanned C-section. This class is a must for all couples—even those who are not anticipating a C-section in order to help prepare for the unexpected.
Early Pregnancy Class
One class; free of charge.
Helps expectant couples learn how to manage their pregnancy and provides them with the knowledge to feel comfortable and secure with their new role in life. Topics include fetal growth and development, body changes during pregnancy, common tests and procedures and prenatal nutrition and exercise.
Caring for Your Baby Class
One, 2-1/2 hour class; $20 per couple.
Helps expectant couples prepare for their new roles by providing important information on infant nutrition, health maintenance, common illnesses and “how to’s” of bathing, diapering and dressing.
Cesarean (C-Section) Birth Class
Prepares all couples, even those who are not expecting a C-Section, for the unexpected. Free of charge.
Get Acquainted Visit (Tour)
Visit our birthing rooms and family centered mother-baby units.
Breastfeeding Your Baby Class
One, 3-hour classes; $30 per couple.
This course provides practical information to guide the expectant couple toward a successful nursing experience. Topics include positioning the baby, getting started, avoiding common problems and pumping and storing milk.
Breast Pump Rentals
Hospital-grade breast pumps rented on a weekly or monthly basis. Individual service and education on fitting and use provided by a health care professional.
Bring your baby to this free weekly support group led by our Certified Lactation Consultant. In an informal, off-site location, participants receive information and support to help ensure breastfeeding success. Topics will vary based on group members’ interests. Hands-on assistance is offered if needed.
One, 2 hour class; $20 per couple.
Classes prepare new or expectant grandparents for their special role discussing current practices in childbirth, advances in infant nutrition and child care, how to baby-proof your home and more.
Big Brother/Big Sister Class
One, 1-1/4 hour class; $20 per family.
This class for children ages three and up helps older brothers and sisters to feel important and learn about their special role in the family. Big brothers and sisters will learn how to be a “mother’s helper” and will be taught how a baby grows inside mommy, newborn safety and how to help diaper and hold a baby. At the completion of the class, graduates will be taken on a tour of the newborn nursery and receive official Big Brother/Big Sister certificates.
New Mothers’ Gathering Place
Weekly, 1-1/2 hour classes; free of charge.
New mothers and their babies meet to socialize and discuss important topics of mutual interest such as adjusting to parenthood, infant growth and development, feeding and nutrition, sleep patterns and infant health and safety.
Mother's Circle of Hope Support Group
A free, 8-week support group meets once a week for women experiencing depression or anxiety related to pregnancy and/or childbirth.
Infant Massage Classes
Four, 1-1/2 hour classes; $50 for one person or $70 per couple. Includes massage oil.
Designed to teach parents the soothing techniques of infant massage. Parents learn to relieve gas and colic, recognize and relieve tension and fussiness, and foster a special way of communicating with their baby.
