Giving Back

Volunteers are essential to Good Shepherd Hospice's commitment to delivering the highest level of care to our patients and their families. Many volunteers join us because of their personal experience with the comfort and dignity that our hospice services provide. We are grateful, whatever your reason for considering volunteering with us, and look forward to exploring opportunities with you to ensure the best possible fit.

All Good Shepherd Hospice volunteers are required to complete our 16-hour hospice training offered in our Farmingdale and Port Jefferson locations.

Please complete the form below and a member of our Volunteer Department staff will be in touch to discuss next steps.

During COVID-19, some volunteer opportunities may not be available.

Volunteer Opportunities

Work directly with patients and families. Community volunteers visit in a variety of settings, including patients' homes, nursing home or assisted living facilities and hospitals. Volunteers make friendly visits, provide caregiver respite, assist with shopping and errands, perform light housekeeping or assist with meal preparation.

Support patients, families and team members at our 16-bed inpatient unit in Port Jefferson and our 12-bed inpatient unit in Rockville Centre. Volunteers provide companionship and sit vigil to provide presence for patients who are actively dying.

Assist the Bereavement Department to support the families and caregivers who have lost loved ones on our program and in the community. Volunteers assist in facilitating bereavement groups, making support calls and other Bereavement Department activities. Additional training is provided.

Support team members in our administrative office in Farmingdale. Responsibilities are tailored to meet the skills and interests of volunteers. This can include data entry, telephone support and managing supplies.
