Leonardo Gonzalez discharge after 110 days

Leonardo and Delia Gonzalez of Hempstead have a lot to celebrate. They have been married for 33 years, have five children and after 110 days can finally be together again as Leonardo was discharged from Mercy Medical Center today.

Leonardo, 70, a Marine Corps veteran and retired auxiliary police officer, was admitted to Mercy on March 24th as a result of COVID-19 and transferred to the hospital's rehab unit on June 2nd. Delia, who was also admitted to Mercy due to COVID-19 on the same day as Leonardo, spent 45 days at the hospital. Both Leonardo and Delia were intubated while at Mercy.

“They saved my life,” said Leonardo of Mercy's medical staff. “God bless the doctors, nurses, therapist and everyone at the hospital. Thank you for making me feel good again.”

His wife and two of their five children were present today to pick him up and take him home.

“When my mom finally came home that was the biggest step for us,” said daughter Yamilet Rivera. “The staff communicated with us every day so we knew my dad’s day would come soon,” said daughter Yamilet Rivera. “We are so grateful for the support both my parents received along the way”.

Mercy employees were also there today to wish him well and give him a cheerful sendoff.
