Catholic Health Appoints New Medical Group President

Catholic Health has named Avni Thakore, MD, FACC, President of the Catholic Health Physician Partners (CHPP) medical group. Since 2018, she has served as Chief Medical Officer for CHPP.

“Dr. Thakore has proven herself an effective executive,” said Catholic Health President and CEO Patrick O’Shaughnessy, DO, MBA. “She will lead CHPP in creating even greater access through further expansion across Long Island and will continue to optimize the patient experience.” 

Board certified in cardiology, nuclear cardiology, echocardiography and internal medicine, Dr. Thakore is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology. Additionally, she is a member of the American Society of Echocardiography, American Society of Nuclear Cardiology, American Medical Association, Medical Society of the State of New York and other professional organizations.

“I’m honored to lead the amazing group of medical professionals that comprise Catholic Health Physician Partners,” Dr. Thakore said. “As we move forward, we will continue expanding our services in an ongoing effort to bring quality patient care closer to Long Island residents.”

Dr. Thakore earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Yale University, graduating magna cum laude, and subsequently received her medical degree at Harvard Medical School. She completed her internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard. This was followed by a Fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease at Boston Medical Center and an Advanced Fellowship in Cardiovascular Imaging at Massachusetts General Hospital and Boston Medical Center.

She has participated in a number of clinical trials as the principal investigator, and was awarded various grants for her research in cardiovascular inflammation and endothelial function and recently led a clinical study on the cardiac effects of COVID-19 at St. Francis Hospital. Dr. Thakore has been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the New England Journal of Medicine, the American Journal of Cardiology, Healthcare Executive and numerous other publications. She has been invited to speak at the International Academy of Cardiology, the American College of Cardiology, and the International Congress on Advanced Cardiovascular Research. 

Dr. Thakore has received many honors, including nominations for NY Top Doctors and NY Castle Connolly Best Doctors, as well as being named among America’s Best Physicians and winner of the Leaders in HealthCare Top Doctor/Top Cardiologist recognition and the Soma Weiss/Harvard Medical School Research Award.

Raised on Long Island, she resides in Nassau County with her family.
