CHS expanded its network of cancer care on Long Island with the opening of its new Cancer Institute at Mercy Medical Center. The 12,350-square-foot facility, located in the Miracle Pavilion (south of the Emergency Department), will provide patients and their families with a one-stop, multidisciplinary approach to cancer care.

The new institute features a 15-bay infusion center, 5 physician offices and 10 exam rooms, with flexible space that can be converted to accommodate for additional growth and services. Patients may get their diagnostic images at the same time and place as they come to consult with as many as three oncologists in one visit: a medical oncologist/hematologist, a surgical oncologist and a radiation oncologist.

The CHS Cancer Institute at Mercy is part of CHS’s robust group of new centers including the institutes at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip and St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn.

“Improving access and enhancing the quality of care is the mission of what we strive for in our communities,” said CHS Chair of Cancer Services, Bhoomi Mehrotra, MD. “This truly is a program that fully embodies the mission of Catholic Health Services and focuses treatment around the patient experience.”

Patients at CHS Cancer Institute at Mercy are treated by the hospital’s leading oncology experts and consultations are provided by St. Francis Hospital's oncology associates. All-inclusive care includes vital support services from oncology social workers, nurse navigators and nutritionists.

“The opening of the institute on Mercy’s campus has allowed us to continue to offer exemplary cancer care close to home, while also meeting the needs of our community by providing access to a modern health care environment, “said Mercy Medical Center President Peter Scaminaci. “We are honored to be able to continue to care for patients, and their families, in our facility.

CHS is now a member of the Roswell Park Care Network, one of the premier cancer care centers in the nation. This affiliation gives Long Islanders access to leading-edge clinical research and trials of novel therapies, the kind that are pushing the new frontiers forward in cancer treatment that aim to produce more positive outcomes. Many of Roswell Park’s trials are in fact proprietary, which means that patients getting care from one of CHS’s cancer institutes will have access to certain trials they might otherwise need to travel great distances to participate in.
