Beyond our six hospitals across Long Island, Catholic Health Services also operates several skilled nursing facilities, each of which is highly recognized for providing outstanding care for seniors and others with short or long term health care needs. For two CHS nursing professionals, that mission is very much a family affair.

Amy Kessler, RN, is a Nurse Manager at St. Catherine of Siena's Nursing and Rehabilitation Care Center in Smithtown. Her mother, Jeanene Sharfenberg, is an LPN at the same facility. Both mother and daughter have worked St. Catherine’s for several years and take great pride in their ability to provide high quality care for seniors.

“Working at St. Catherine’s Nursing & Rehab is unique,” says Sharfenberg. “I work on a Long Term Care unit, which gives me a chance to really get to know my patients and their families. Caring for mainly the same patients day after day allows us to become a part of their extended family. We often exchange family stories, many of my residents know my daughter as well, so it makes the stories even more personalized. This all plays a part of their experience here.”

As with CHS’s other skilled nursing facilities, St. Catherine of Siena's Nursing and Rehabilitation Care Center has received 5 stars from CMS for quality measures, and was also named among the Best Nursing Homes in America for short-term rehabilitation by U.S. News & World Report (2020-21 rankings). Additionally, St. Catherine of Siena Nursing & Rehabilitation Care Center made Newsweek’s 2020 list of Best Nursing Homes.

“I have worked here for many years, starting as a CNA and now as an RN,” says Kessler. “I can honestly say I have always felt safe and secure in my work environment. It is much different than a hospital setting. For many patients this is their home, for others their safe place to grow stronger before they can return home. We treat each patient with individualized care to meet their needs.”

Clearly, for the staff of our CHS’s skilled nursing facilities, caring isn’t just what we do – it’s who are.
