“To achieve this honor is a true testament to the excellence of our nursing and support staff,” said Good Samaritan Hospital President Ruth E. Hennessey.

Good Sam Magnet

The American Nurses Credential Center (ANCC) has awarded Catholic Health’s Good Samaritan Hospital one of the most coveted and prestigious honors a hospital and its nurses can achieve—Magnet® recognition for excellence in nursing care. This recognition highlights exceptional clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction, as well as nursing professionalism, collaboration and teamwork. Good Samaritan is the only hospital on the south shore of Suffolk County to earn this distinction, which is held by less than nine percent of hospitals nationwide.

“To achieve this honor is a true testament to the excellence of our nursing and support staff,” said Good Samaritan Hospital President Ruth E. Hennessey. “This commitment to our patients is a key reason why Good Samaritan is one of the premier health care facilities in Suffolk County and the hub for Catholic Health in the region, with services including the Stroke & Brain Aneurysm Center, the Cancer Institute and the St. Francis Heart Center at Good Samaritan.”

Research has shown that Magnet® recognition benefits hospitals and their communities with a nursing staff who is well qualified and promotes quality patient care.

The Magnet Recognition Program® highlights health care organizations that demonstrate excellence in nursing philosophy and practice, adhere to national standards for improving patient care, have an active research program, and display leadership and sensitivity to cultural and ethnic diversity.

“We are extremely proud to have earned this prestigious national recognition for nursing. It is the ultimate credential for high quality nursing care,” said Catholic Health’s Senior Vice President of Patient Care and Good Samaritan’s Chief Nursing Officer Gara Edelstein. “This top designation joins a long list of national accolades we have consistently received.”

The ANCC is a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association and is the largest and most prominent nursing credentialing organization in the United States. Good Samaritan Hospital’s Magnet® designation is valid for four years with ongoing review. The West Islip hospital now joins Catholic Health's St. Francis Hospital & Heart Center®, which has held Magnet® designation since 2006.
