Catholic Health Services’s (CHS) Maryhaven Center of Hope earned a 2020 Pinnacle Award for Quality and Patient Safety from the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS).

“This is an incredible honor for our team, and I’m extremely proud of the time and commitment they gave to this project,” said Maryhaven Chief Administrative Officer Charles Vanek.  “This exemplifies the dedication throughout CHS to continued quality performance improvement and patient safety.”

The HANYS Pinnacle Award for Quality and Patient Safety recognizes and encourages broad dissemination of successful quality improvement and innovative patient safety initiatives in four categories based on organization size and type.

Maryhaven won the award for its program, “The Reduction of Aggressive Behaviors and Injuries to Staff via De-escalation Training and Debriefing,” which took top honors in the post-acute/outpatient category.

Individuals with intellectual developmental disabilities may present severe challenging behaviors, potentially leading to client or staff injuries. In 2019, de-escalation training based on a curriculum developed by the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities was provided, in conjunction with other curricula. All new hires and more than 250 veteran staff have been trained in team sessions for greater impact. Other tactics have included a debriefing protocol, designed to allow staff to feel supported and create a learning environment. Managers study this protocol in two-hour sessions, incorporating video modeling, PowerPoint, group discussions and role play.

Seventeen of Maryhaven’s 29 locations achieved a reduction in frequency of aggression, self-injury and property destruction. Overall, these behaviors decreased by 23% across all sites, as did the use of physical interventions, and staff injuries resulting in lost work declined by 35%.
