Dr. Ali

Catholic Health’s St. Francis Hospital & Heart Center® has appointed Ziad Ali, MD, DPhil, director of the hospital’s DeMatteis Cardiovascular Institute.

Prior to joining St. Francis, Dr. Ali was with Columbia University Medical Center where he served as director of Intravascular Imaging and Physiology, director of Cardio-nephrology and associate director of Translational Science. Also at Columbia, he served as the Victoria and Esther Aboodi Cardiology Researcher, Louis V. Gerstner Jr. Scholar and Associate Professor of Medicine.

In his new role, the Harrison, N.Y. resident will continue to treat patients with cardiovascular disease, practicing general and interventional cardiology at St. Francis Hospital with a focus on patients with chronic kidney disease. He will also lead the hospital’s research initiatives as the director of the DeMatteis Cardiovascular Institute and director of Investigational Interventional Cardiology.

“St. Francis has long been known as a leader in providing cutting-edge cardiovascular services, a high level of patient care and research into new treatment areas,” said Dr. Ali. “Going forward, our research efforts will be focused on further integrating clinical care, research, rehabilitation, education and innovation. This will allow us to further strengthen our position nationally and globally as a leader in cardiac care.”

A graduate of the University of Sheffield in Sheffield, England, where he earned with honors and distinction his bachelors of medicine and bachelors of surgery, Dr. Ali continued his education at the University of Oxford in England where he received his doctorate.

He completed training at several highly regarded medical institutions including the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom, Stanford University in California, Mount Sinai Hospital in New York and the University of Oxford.

“Ongoing research is vital to developing new cardiovascular treatment methods that will further enhance care for patients and allow those with heart problems to live longer, healthier lives,” said Catholic Health’s St. Francis Hospital’s Chairman of Cardiology Richard Shlofmitz, MD. “Dr. Ali’s expertise will further those efforts here at St. Francis.”

“St. Francis has a long history of being a leader in research and development of new, minimally-invasive cardiovascular treatments,” said St. Francis Hospital President Charles Lucore, M.D. “Enhancing those efforts at the DeMatteis Cardiovascular Institute under the leadership of Dr. Ali presents us with opportunities to develop new ways to treat the many cardiac issues we see with our patients on a daily basis.”
