st. joseph hospital bariatric team members

Catholic Health’s St. Joseph Hospital has expanded its surgery options, adding bariatric surgery and medically-supervised weight loss to its roster of services. Beginning this month, weight loss procedures, including sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass and revisional bariatric surgery, will be performed at the Bethpage hospital.

Catholic Health Chairman of Bariatric Surgery Shawn Garber, MD, founder and director of the New York Bariatric Group (NYBG), and St. Joseph Hospital Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery Nirav Desai, MD, are leading the surgical procedures and efforts at St. Joseph.

“It’s no secret that the pandemic has fueled the rise of obesity rates across the county. Bariatric surgery offers many benefits, including reducing the risks of obesity-related conditions such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer. I’m excited that St. Joseph is able to offer this critical service to our community at a time where it is needed the most,” said the hospital’s Chief Medical Officer Howard Sussman, MD.

To accommodate the new surgery options, Catholic Health and NYBG opened an office at 146A Manetto Hill Road in Plainview. There they will be seeing patients, beginning Monday, July 18.

“Bariatric surgery offers patients an opportunity to regain control of their life and become healthier. Supporting patients through their weight loss journey is the most gratifying part of my practice. We are thrilled to announce our new partnership with St. Joseph Hospital,” said Dr. Desai.

With the latest addition, Catholic Health now offers bariatric and weight loss surgery options at all six of its hospitals spanning Nassau and Suffolk counties. Each hospital is fully accredited as Comprehensive Bariatric Surgery Centers by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. This accomplishment recognizes the teams’ advanced expertise and the high-quality care they provide.
