Frequently Asked Questions
The one-year fellowship provides level III training in cardiac CT and MRI. Services include nationally renowned interventional, electrophysiology, heart failure and structural heart programs that support our cardiovascular imaging services.
Between 6 to 10 CMR, 25-30 cardiac CTAs (50% coronary CTA, 30% structural, 20% EP and others) as well as 10-15 coronary calcium scores are performed daily. Our volume continues to grow. Nearly 12,000 studies per year allow for achievement of level III cardiac CT and level III cardiac MRI qualifications. Trainees will gain hands- on experience in scanning and post-processing using cutting edge software for image analysis.
Cardiac CT is performed on state-of-the-art scanners including the first and only dedicated cardiovascular Siemens Naeotom Alpha photon counting CT scanner in the country. We perform the full breadth of CT studies, including coronary, structural (a large number of clinical and research TAVR, TMVR, tricuspid interventions and left atrial appendage occluder planning) and EP imaging with routine use of CT-FFR and plaque characterization technologies.
Cardiac MRI is performed on state-of-the-art 1.5T and 3.0T scanners with routine use of advanced sequences including parametric mapping, compressed sensing, 4D flow and works-in-progress research sequences. In addition to standard CMR, we perform pharmacologic stress imaging, adult congenital heart disease, arrhythmia imaging, vascular studies as well as CMR in patients with pacemakers/defibrillators.
There are 18 full-time dedicated imaging cardiologists board certified in multiple modalities, supported by a staff of dedicated cardiac CT and MRI technologists and nurses, imaging analysts, MRI/imaging physicists and biostatisticians.
Dedicated multi-modality imaging didactic lectures as well as cardiovascular grands rounds will be provided. Multi-disciplinary heart valve team discussions occur on a regular basis. Research is encouraged and supported with adequate physician mentors, research analysts and biostatisticians.

I am glad that I chose to train at St. Francis. The training with the people and volumes it had was the biggest difference in taking me from a course certified imager to a competent, comfortable, board certified advanced cardiac imager.
Sourabh Prabhakar, MD, past Cardiovascular Imaging Fellow

I started my imaging fellowship after practicing general cardiology for a few years, and the entire staff including faculty, technologists, nurses, medical assistants and researchers helped me feel welcome and part of the team from day one.
