The Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS) recognized Catholic Health’s commitment to create the safest environments and deliver the best outcomes with its 2021 Pinnacle Award for Quality & Patient Safety.

“Our goal is to deliver the best possible care to our patients,” said Catholic Health President and Chief Executive Officer Patrick O’Shaughnessy, DO, MBA. “This honor reflects a team effort from across our health system, and I commend our employees for their dedication to this mission.”

The HANYS Pinnacle Award for Quality & Patient Safety encourages and recognizes a broad dissemination of successful quality improvement and innovative patient safety initiatives in four categories based on organization size and type.

Catholic Health won for its submission, Implementing a Patient Experience Program, in the “Healthcare System or Hospital with 500 Beds or More” category. Catholic Health’s entry was selected from the 120 nominations HANYS received for the 2021 Pinnacle Awards.

The project focused on changing the organization’s culture, centering on delivering an excellent patient experience in every encounter—Every Patient, Every Time. This led to Catholic Health’s Golden Keys to I-CARE behavior as the guiding principles of the project, which celebrates positive patient experience as the “key” to success.

“Culture change is not an ‘initiative,’ it is a way of being,” said Catholic Health Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Golbin, DO, MBA. “Our teams are committed to service excellence throughout our system, which is a critical component of a high-reliability organization. This focus contributes to the delivery of a safe and positive health care experience and ultimately correlates with successful patient outcomes.”

These changes resulted in Catholic Health’s Press Ganey score for “Overall Rating” increasing with patient feedback identifying four communication behavior priorities for driving continuous improvement.

Initially focused on the acute care setting, this program has been successfully implemented across all Catholic Health physician practices, home care, hospice and nursing home facilities.

In addition to being recognized by HANYS, this program also won “Best System Transformation Project” at Catholic Health’s Pinnacle Awards in October.
