Catholic Health Services Offering Virtual Bereavement Support Groups
As part of its ongoing effort to support families who have lost a loved one, Catholic Health Services’s (CHS) Good Shepherd Hospice is offering three virtual bereavement support groups.
One group specific for those grieving a loved one who passed from COVID-19 will be held Wednesdays beginning May 20 and run for 6 consecutive weeks from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
“We felt that we needed to address the unique, complex and traumatic circumstances of the pandemic, which can be especially challenging to those who are grieving,” said Good Shepherd Hospice Director of Bereavement Maribeth McKeever.”
On June 11, two additional bereavement support groups will begin: Loss of a Spouse/Partner from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Adult Loss of a Parent or Sibling from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Both groups will meet once a week and run for six consecutive Thursdays. Each meeting will be held online via Zoom and are limited to 20 participants with 2 bereavement specialists moderating.
McKeever said bereavement support is always important but the need is greater now given the challenges presented by COVID-19.
“During what we would consider ‘normal times’ grief can be painful and overwhelming,” she said. “We are living in a time that is very unique and complex and some are dealing with traumatic experiences. People need to have an outlet to communicate with others and share what they are feeling.”
