Catholic Health’s three skilled nursing facilities scored high marks in U.S. News & World Report’s annual Best Nursing Homes report.

Out of 616 nursing homes in New York State, Our Lady of Consolation Nursing and Rehabilitation (OLC) in West Islip is 1 of 44 locations to receive a 5 out of 5 score. The West Islip long-term care facility also achieved 3 of out 3 in short-term care and long-term care.

OLC’s short-term program was lauded for being well above the state average in several important categories. These include having a high percentage of rehabilitating patients return home instead of transferring to another health care facility after treatment and for registered nurse staffing levels.

The nursing facility’s long-term care program was rated excellent for having a minimal amount of patient emergency department visits and for being above average in hospital readmissions.

Catholic Health’s St. Catherine of Siena Nursing and Rehabilitation in Smithtown was rated “high performing” for short-term care, and the system’s Good Samaritan Nursing and Rehabilitation in Sayville earned a “high-performing” rating for long-term care.

The U.S. News Best Nursing Home ratings used data from Nursing Home Compare, a program run by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the federal agency that sets and enforces standards for nursing homes. Short-term care ratings evaluate the care delivered to patients after a hospitalization for surgery, heart attack, stroke, injury or similar condition. Long-term care rankings take into account care delivered to residents who are no longer able to live independently and need help with various daily activities.
