COVID Anniversary Reflection at Good Samaritan Hospital

Catholic Health’s Good Samaritan Hospital commemorated one-year of the COVID-19 pandemic in a ceremony held in the front circle at the West Islip hospital on March 24.

Hospital President Ruth Hennessey said the gathering of physicians, nurses and other frontline personnel marked a day of reflection, remembrance and recognition.

“Approximately one year ago, our lives changed,” she said. “The COVID-19 pandemic became a health crisis unlike any other I have seen in my many years in health care.”

As the number of COVID cases rose rapidly this time last year, patients flocked to Good Samaritan’s Emergency Department for treatment. This is when the hospital’s health care heroes rose to the challenge.

“I have seen unbelievable acts of heroism, countless acts of compassion, overwhelming displays of selfless behavior and a community spirit unlike any other,” Hennessey said. “I am so proud to be a part of this incredible team and so humbled by your acts of selfless behavior.”

Hennessey and the team at Good Samaritan were honored by Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter, who presented a citation and thanked front line workers for their hard work, bravery and service to the community.

Additionally, a bench in honor of those lost to COVID-19 was dedicated and will be placed on the hospital campus.
