Catholic Health’s St. Francis Hospital & Heart Center® has named Raj K. Narayan, MD, FACS, as chief of its division of neurosurgery. Dr. Narayan, a proven medical leader, has led and developed three major neurosurgery departments; at Temple University in Philadelphia, The University of Cincinnati, and most recently at Northwell Health. 
 
A board-certified neurosurgeon, Dr. Narayan is internationally known for his research on traumatic brain injury. Over the course of his career, he has published 140 peer-reviewed scientific papers, 65 book chapters, and co-edited NEUROTRAUMA, the major textbook on head and spinal injury. Additionally, Dr. Narayan helped to develop the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and Brain Trauma Foundation Severe Traumatic Brain Injury Management Guidelines that have been adopted both nationally and internationally. He is a member of many prestigious professional societies and has trained close to 100 neurosurgeons.

Dr. Narayan obtained his medical degree from the Christian Medical College in Vellore, India. He completed a neurosurgery residency at the Medical College of Virginia-VCU (1982) and a fellowship at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD (1985). He served on the faculty of Baylor College of Medicine in Houston for 10 years, rising to the rank of full Professor, before he was recruited to Philadelphia to take the leadership of Neurosurgery in 1995.
