Leadership boils down to communication—and caring

Tara Oneill

Tara Oneill is a big believer in teamwork. As Radiology Supervisor at St. Joseph Hospital, she knows that excellence depends on cooperation, dedication and mutual support. “That’s what we have here, a team that backs each other up, fills in the gaps, and comes through for team wins,” says the 25-year veteran of Catholic Health.

Tara started in 1998, in a clerical position at Mercy Hospital. “I instantly felt drawn to health care and decided to go to school to become a radiology technician,” she recalled.  Upon completion of her training she began her new career path at St. Joseph Hospital in 2005, handling radiology for the Emergency Department (ED).

“That’s where you get your real education in imaging. The ED gets every lid of patient, from injury to illness. It can get tense, but you’re aware that you play a key role in the patient’s recovery, so you stay with it.

Tara has stayed with it, becoming Radiology Supervisor in 2021. She now leads a team of 59. “It’s a great group; all very talented and very dedicated. We take our I-CARE values very seriously. That’s how we connect what we do to the patient experience.”

Asked what’s the most indispensable ingredient in leading a high performing team, Tara is quick to answer. “Communication,” she says. “Whenever I’m facing with some sort of obstacle I find myself articulating the Catholic mission of caring and our governing I-CARE values. They keep us focused, centered and mindful of the big picture.”

Tara says there’s a unifying spirit at Catholic Health. “I have to say, so many over my time here have extended themselves for me. I’ve been mentored, supported and inspired from the get-go, and it continues with each new week.”

Tara says the Catholic Health credo amounts to one simple driver. “We treat every patient like a member of our own family. We just want to show that we’re on their side, always.”
