OB/GYN Residency

Good Samaritan University Hospital offers a comprehensive and progressive residency in obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN). Upon completing the four-year residency, you will be equipped to manage medical and surgical problems in all aspects of the specialty.

A Complete Training Experience

The OB/GYN Residency Program focuses on every facet of women's health care, with an emphasis on primary care in the curriculum. The role of the OB/GYN in providing this total health care, which has long been practiced, is an integral part of our training program.

Didactic needs are met through lectures, journal clubs, case presentations, and teaching rounds. Senior residents are key in providing constant and consistent support, while encouraging the continued learning process.

Training includes instruction on the most advanced technologies, including the da Vinci Surgical System for minimally invasive, robotic-assisted gynecologic procedures.

You will also participate in continuity of care through our affiliation with Sun River Health (formerly HRHCare). Working in community health centers, you will care for a wide range of OB/GYN patients, following them through their course of treatment, which may include deliveries, surgeries or routine screenings.

Accreditation

The OB/GYN Residency at Good Samaritan University Hospital is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Frequently Asked Questions

Our OB/GYN residency is a well-established program that began in 1999 as an AOA accredited program. In 2017, we became accredited by the ACGME.

Yes, we always set aside time for the candidates to informally meet and interact with current residents, without faculty. This usually occurs on interview day. There are some questions are best answered by residents.

Yes, the more experience and skill you obtain, the more proficient you become at independently assessing and rendering treatment. Graduated responsibility over the course of a residency program is required to produce competent self-sufficient physicians. Our program has clearly defined goals and a method to ensure residents meet those milestones.

Your co-residents and interns become a very significant part of your life. An environment with conflict and undue competition is not supportive and conducive to education. Residency involves a large commitment of time and hard work. You need to be surrounded by people who interact well and are supportive of each other. During the day of your interview, you can get a feel for the culture at Good Samaritan Hospital. But the best way is to do a rotation in the hospital you are considering.

One of the built-in features of our program is to foster positive relationships between our residents and attendings. These interactions include one-to-one mentor meetings, social events and informal opportunities. In evaluating a program, ask yourself: Do the residents and attendings seem to get along together? Do they have a good time together? Or do they dislike each other? Would I enjoy working in this environment  for four years?

At Good Samaritan Hospital, we believe we have a comprehensive patient mix with a reasonable workload and many interesting clinical cases. We allow enough time for academics and other interests. As you consider your workload as a resident, ask yourself: Is the schedule fair and reasonable? Will I be so busy that I will be exhausted and will not have the time or energy to read? Is the patient load sufficient to develop procedural and clinical proficiency as an OB/GYN physician?

Residency is a full-time job and then some. No matter what field or institution you choose, you are going to spend a lot of time away from home. In our program, we regularly organize special events where residents, their immediate families and significant others can participate. It gives a chance for the most important people in our lives to be included in our residency family. At Good Samaritan Hospital, we also foster relationships through regular individual resident meetings with a faculty, as well as general residency meetings to address issues.

Program Features

Good Samaritan Hospital offers our residents a competitive salary and benefits package. Some residency programs offer additional perks to help you as you learn.

Active participation in research is essential to your development. The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology supports research, and we expect residents to participate in ongoing departmental projects.

We believe that basic research skills allow residents to critically evaluate the findings of published literature and implement this knowledge in their clinical practice. The Academic Development Committee is available to review all research projects. This committee offers suggestions and constructive criticism in a supportive environment prior to submission for Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval or publication.

You will also have access to a dedicated statistician, who can offer support for your projects that are in progress, as well as those you are interested in pursuing.

At the end of each academic year, our program sponsors the Good Samaritan Hospital Research Conference. Senior residents have a forum to present their completed research projects to attendings, staff, fellow residents, and family members.

While research design, statistical concepts, data analysis techniques and participation in the journal club are part of the core curriculum, we encourage and promote all residents to become participants in the academic growth of obstetrics and gynecology.

Good Samaritan Hospital is a major affiliate and teaching campus for the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM) and Mount Sinai School of Medicine. We offer third- and fourth-year medical student rotations in multiple specialties, including OB/GYN, Surgery, Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, and Pediatrics.

OB/GYN offers OB Sub/I rotations and Gynecologic Surgery rotations to fourth-year medical students year round. These are structured so students become an integral part of the rotation and of the OB/GYN team. Our OB/GYN faculty and residents are energetic and highly motivated to promote obstetrics and gynecology and ensure an educational and rewarding rotation.

Students are responsible for the complete care and management of their assigned patients from initial work-up through disposition. Students have plenty of opportunity to practice basic procedures and many have successfully performed more invasive or emergent procedures. Students always work under the supervision of the OB/GYN attending and a senior resident when assigned to the same team.

The total number of students doing an elective at a given time is intentionally restricted to avoid diluting the educational experience of all rotators. To arrange an OB Sub/I rotation or a Gynecologic Surgery rotation, contact the Department of Graduate Medical Education at 631-376-4163.

Dress Code

Good Samaritan Hospital has a dress code requiring scrubs and a lab coat to be worn at all times when performing clinical duties. A copy of the full dress code policy is available from the Department of Medical Education.

Academic Opportunities

  • Core Reading Material — Topics reflect the fundamentals of obstetrics and gynecology.
  • Thursday Resident Protected Time — Weekly educational lecture series occur every Thursday from 7 a.m. to 11a.m. All rotators are required to attend and participate.
  • Walking/Sign-out Rounds — Formal bedside rounds are made as the OB teams change shift. This gives the OB attending and residents the opportunity to hand off their patients to the next team. Students are expected to actively participate when learning points related to the patient caseload are discussed.

Evaluation

Students are evaluated based on feedback from their senior residents and faculty attendings. In addition to our evaluation of the student's performance on their rotation, students likewise have the opportunity to evaluate their rotation experience. Students who would like to request a standardized letter of evaluation (SLOE) should do so prior to the end of their rotation.
